USDA enhances stone fruit crop insurance in the Northwest

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency has made changes to the apple, cherry and stone fruit Federal Crop Insurance Corp. multi-peril crop insurance program for 2011.

For the first time in the Pacific Northwest, coverage is available for fresh plums/prunes under the new Stonefruit MPCI Provisions, according to a news release.

Pluots are covered under the plum provisions.

The new coverage is available in:

Idaho: Canyon, Gem, Payette and Washington counties;

Oregon: Douglas, Polk, Umatilla, Washington and Yamhill counties; and

Washington: Benton, Okanogan, Walla Walla and Yakima counties.

Apple MPCI and Actual Revenue History (ARH) Cherry Pilot Provisions also were modified for the 2011 crop year.

Deadline to apply is Nov. 22.
