Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Trimble has acquired NTech Industries, a Ukiah, Calif., firm that makes GreenSeeker and WeedSeeker crop sensing technologies.

Among the products Trimble markets are global positioning systems and hands-free steering devices.

NTech markets the GreenSeeker system, which measures light reflected from plant tissue on the fly, according to a news release. The data is then used to vary the rate of nitrogen application to match the plants' needs.

The WeedSeeker system controls herbiicide sprayers, turning off the nozzles when plants weren't present and turning them on when there are plants.

The result is a significant herbicide savings since producers are only applying the material to weeds and not bare ground, according to the release.
