Ohioans recognized for sustainability contributions

Doug SiebertOhio Ecological Food and Farm AssociationOrganic producers Doug Siebert and Leslie Garcia received the 2012 Stewardship Award at the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association's 33rd annual conference. The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Assocation recently recognized Doug Siebert and Leslie Garcia of Greene County for their "oustanding contributions to the sustainble agriculture community."

The two, who have farmed organically as Peach Mountain Organics since 1992, received the 2012 Stewardship Award at the association's 33rd annual conference in Columbus, according to a news release.

Siebert and Garcia have 43 acres, of which more than 25 are certified organic.

Their two farm sites and one-half acre of greenhouse is located in Spring Valley, Ohio.

They sell their products at Yellow Springs Farmers Market and to local restaurants, grocery stores and health food stores.

Siebert and Garcia grow organic mixed vegetables, microgreens, fresh-cut flowers, mushrooms, hay and greenhouse plants.

Steve Edwards, who serves on the association's board of directors, noted that the two are willing to share their experiences with other growers.

Siebert and Garcia also were involved in creating the association as well as the Federation of Ohio River Cooperatives.
