Bio-ferm of Tulln, Austria, has granted Westbridge Agricultural Products of Vista, Calif., exclusive U.S. distribution rights to Blossom Protect, a biological product to control fire blight in pome fruit.
Environmental Protection Agency and state registrations are pending, according to a news release.
The product contains the active ingredient Aureobasidium pullulans, a type of yeast.
Tim Smith, a Washington State University Extension tree fruit educator in Wenatchee, conducted field trials with the product for four years in apples.
He found the dried yeast product provided similar or better control of fire blight than currently registered antibiotics, according to a university research report.
