Vicky BoydCrop protection and production costs are two subjects addressed in a free economic issues webinar.Understanding the economics and economic issues surrounding a crop helps put you in the driver seat to succeed.

And potatoes are no exception.

The non-profit Plant Management Network has launched two educational webinars on the subject hosted by Joe Guenthner, an agricultural economics professor at the University of Idaho, Moscow, according to a news release.

The sessions, titled "Potato Economics" and "Potato Economic Issues 2012," are designed for growers and consultants.

Potato Economics discusses economic principles that apply to potato markets.

Potato Economic Issues 2012 covers four economic issues affecting the industry:

• Market power in the potato marketing chain,

• Potato production costs,

• Crop protection and

• Marketing, which includes discussion of a rapidly growing restaurant chain that buys large volumes of fresh potatoes.

Both presentations will have open access through Aug. 31.

You also can view other presentations on the Focus on Potato site at www.plantmanagementnetwork.org.

The Plant Management Network is a joint effort of the American Society of Agronomy, American Phytopathological Society and Crop Science Society of America.
