Pathogens can lurk inside plant tissues

Washing the exterior of produce may not be enough to remove Salmonella and E. coli, because the organisms also can live iniside plant tissues.

Tests conducted by Purdue University researchers found E. coli O157:H7 was present in tissues of mung been sprouts and Salmonella in peanut seedlings after seeds were contaminated before planting.
