Valent's parent firm acquires fungicide

Sumitomo Chemical Co., the parent company of Valent USA, Corp. plans to acquire the ethaboxam fungicide business from LG Life Sciences Ltd. of South Korea.

Ethaboxam fungicide controls a wide array of plant diseases, including downy mildew, late blight and Pythium, according to a news release.

Among the crops it's effective on are grapes, vegetables, potatoes, corn and other row crops.

It is a systemic and can be applied to the soil or as a foliar or seed treatment.

The fungicide has been marketed in several countries since 2005.

Sumitomo had been working with the fungicide under license from LG Life Sciences.

one of its targeted uses is as a seed treatment.

Valent USA submitted a product registration to the Environmental Protection Agency and its Canadian counterpart in September.

As part of the agreement, LG Life Sciences will toll manufacture the product's technical grade to supply to Sumitomo.
