Valent BioSciences Corp. of Libertyville, Ill., plans to build a state-of-the-art fermentation facility in Osage, Iowa, to produce biorational products.

Valent BioSciences will invest about $150 million, making it the largest single investment by any company in the world to support manufacturing and formulating biorational products, according to a news release.

Many biorational, or biological, pest-control products are made through fermentation. Among them is Bt, or Bacillus thuringiensis.

Groundbreaking is expected in 2012.

The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2014. Until then, manufacturing will continue at the firm's North Chicago, Ill., facility.
