The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to conduct a referendum on proposed pistachio marketing order amendments that would regulate pistachios from California, Arizona and New Mexico.

The referendum is scheduled for Oct. 3-14, a USDA news release said, to gauge support for the amendments.

For these referendums, the USDA mails ballots to all known pistachio growers in the three states.

The proposed amendments cover a range of changes, from minor fixes like correcting errors in references to major changes like providing the order authority to establish quality and inspection requirements for exported shipments.

Notice of the referendum and the proposed amendments were published in the Federal Register Sept. 15.
