UFW fights dwindling membership

Membership in the United Farm Workers of America is declining, and organizers blame employer initimidation, high worker turnover and demographic changes.

Union officials want to change the way elections are conducted, at least in California. SB 104—also known as the "card check act"— was introduced by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, and would do just that.
