Texas MarketMakerCourtesy Texas AgriLifeTexas MarketMaker contains a database of potential sellers and buyers.Much of the funding for the online marketing resource, Texas MarketMaker, comes from recovery efforts surrounding the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill in the gulf.

But the website also offers opportunities for buyers and sellers who deal in produce and other farm products, according to a news release.

MarketMaker is a free online resource that's been launched by Extension in 19 states so far, including Florida.

It was originally developed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

MarketMaker websites offer a searchable database designed to match buyers and sellers throughout the food chain.

Sites also offer demographic information with GIS mapping to help users locate nearby food sources and consumer populations.

The Texas site is funded in part by the Gulf State Marine Fisheries Commission.

Texas AgriLife plans to conduct a series of workshops across the state titled MarketReady that will provide information to farmers about how to grow, process, label and market their products directly to restaurants and specialty retail outlets.
