In fact, 97% of respondents said they eat potatoes, and 81% said they had them as a side dish, snack or main course an average of three days per week.
The survey, conducted by Culver City, Calif.-based Kelton Research between Jan. 7 and Feb. 3, involved 1,000 adults nationwide, ages 18 and over. Participants responded to an e-mail invitation and then took the online survey.
“We were thrilled with the survey results, which found consumer attitudes toward potatoes shifting,” Frank Muir, commission president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. “America’s favorite vegetable is now consumed three times a week, up from two times per week in 2009.”
He was referring to a similar survey Kelton conducted in 2009 for the commission that showed twice weekly consumption.
Other findings from this year’s survey:
• More men than women — 84% versus 78% — eat potatoes once per week.
• Midwesterners are more likely than residents of other regions — 88% versus 78% — to eat potatoes once per week.
• Baked is the top preparation method, 29%; followed by mashed, 25%; french fries, 17%; and hash browns, 9%.
• Nearly three-fourths of respondents — 72% — said they would choose Idaho potatoes over spuds from other states.
