The Corvallis-based institution hired Sagar Sathuvalli to lead potato breeding efforts at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center, according to a news release.
He will start in January.
Sathuvalli earned master's and doctorate degrees in horticulture from OSU.
In 2011, he was a post-doctoral researcher in hazelnut breeding and genetics at the university.
Sathuvalli fills the position formerly held by Dan Hane, who retired, and Isabel Vales, who took a job elsewhere.
The position had remained unfilled because of budget woes, according to the release.
Part of Sathuvalli's salary will be funded through an endowment created by a $500,000 donation by the Oregon Potato Commission.
He will collaborate with colleagues in Washington and Idaho as part of the Pacific Northwest Tri-State Breeding Program.
