HESCO, or Highland-Exchange Service Cooperative, of Waverly and Macro Plastics of Fairfield, Calilf., have jointly donated $10,000 to the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame for the Florida Citrus Archives housed at Lakeland-based Florida Southern College.

The funds will be used to expand the current two-student endowment to four, says Brenda Eubanks Burnette, hall of fame executive director.

The students catalog and scan old publications and other printed media into digital formats.

For example, they are digitizing more than 1,000 citrus crate labels from 2010 Citrus Hall of Famer Jim Ellis’ collection and creating a world database, so anybody can search by specific topic, such as color, artwork or packinghouse, Burnette says.

In addition, they are collecting oral history, including videotaping, from old-timers in the industry.

“The range is incredible,” Burnette says of the historical items being added to the collection.
