Bedner harvested and shipped the peppers March 25. They are marked with the lot code 102 on the side of each box, according to an April 26 news release from the company.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall and no other Bedner Growers’ products are affected by the recall. Bedner Growers shipped the all of the recalled peppers to Delk Produce Sales, Pompano Beach, Fla., on March 25, according to the release. After that, Bedner Growers did not handle or further distribute the recalled product.
Green bell peppers have a 21-day shelf life, according to the Bedner news release.
“According to our customer, product was distributed nationally with a small number of cases also going to Quebec, Canada,” according to the release.
Bedner officials initiated the recall within hours of receiving notification from the Food and Drug Administration “late on April 25,” the release said.
The FDA told company officials a single sample taken April 4 had tested positive for salmonella. Government officials took the sample before the produce reached a retail outlet, but they did not inform Bedner Growers of the sample test until April 25.
“We use FDA-supported and industry-accepted, on-farm good agricultural practices to grow and harvest our fresh produce, and we are in the process of compiling and providing those records to FDA,” said operations manager Marie Bedner in the news release.
Bedner Growers was able to trace the product to one lot harvested in a particular section of a single farm on March 25.
“Although the peppers were picked and shipped a month ago, we are voluntarily issuing this recall because we want to ensure that we minimize even the slightest risk to public health,” said Bedner. “As a fourth-generation family farm, we understand that the shoppers who buy our products are the heart of our business, and we are taking this matter seriously.”
