Budget cuts end food pathogen screening program

The House of Representatives has approved a bill that would end funding of the Microbiological Data Program, which tests about 15,000 samples of high-risk produce annually for pathogens, including Salmonella and E. coli.

The produce industry, which has questioned whether the program duplicates other existing ones, pushed to end the $4.5 million in funding.
