The North American Raspberry & Blackberry Association recently honored John Clark, a University of Arkansas horticulture professor, for his years of work developing new blackberries varieties.

Most recently, Clark has bred primocane varieties—ones that bear fruit on this year's wood, according to a news release.

Most of the traditional floricane varieties only produce fruit on canes the second year.

Among the releases to Clark's credit are Ouachita, Natchez, Navajo, Apache, Kiowa, Arapaho, Choctaw and the primocane Prime Jim, Prime Jan and PrimeArk 45.

Natchez and Ouachita have been widely planted in the East, Califorina and internationally.

Clark received the Distinguished Service Award at the association's annual meeting in Sandusky, Ohio, earlier this month.
