Courtesy Black Gold FarmsTo help retailers capitalize on consumers' desires for locally grown, Black Gold Farms uses regionally themed bags for their red potatoes such as this one for spuds grown in Texas.Black Gold Farms has begun its 2014 red potato harvest, which boasts locally grown spuds beginning in Texas and continuing north to the Red River Valley as the season progresses.
Based in Grand Forks, N.D., the family company has unique 5-pound poly bags for each of the specific growing regions from Texas, Georgia, the Mississippi Delta, Indiana and North Dakota.
“With our unique geographic diversity, we are able to provide a distinctive and exciting locally grown program for summer red potatoes,” marketing director Leah Brakke said in the release.
“We see this as a huge opportunity for our retail customers to showcase local product and packaging that they can take pride in. Every location is different, and we want to capture that essence as much as we can.”
Black Gold uses local images from each growing region on its bags, along with messages about the locally grown potatoes. Retailers can develop regionally specific campaigns and customize point-of-sale materials to emphasize the locally-grown benefits of the potatoes, according to the release.
Brakke said geographically targeted social marketing campaigns are another technique retailers can use with the Black Gold potatoes to increase sales.
“We strongly believe that this particular program contributes to our sustainability efforts, as well as being able to deliver offerings that other suppliers can’t provide, like a year-round supply of potatoes from us, a single grower,” national produce sales director Glen Reynolds said in the release.
