Bayer CropScience, the Monheim, Germany-based parent of Nunhems seed, plans to acquire the watermelon and melon business of Abbott & Cobb Inc., Feasterville, Pa.

The acquisition will strengthen Nunhem's presence in the melon markets, according to a news release.

Nunhems already has 28 major vegetables and about 2,500 varieties worldwide, according to the release.

About 30 Abbott & Cobb employees are expected to join Nunhems.

Abbott & Cobb will continue to handle other vegetable crops, such as sweet corn, peppers and squash.
