Alico hires plant breeding, research director

Fort Myers, Fla.-based Alico Inc. has hired Marta Francis to direct its plant breeding and research efforts.

Before joining Alico, she was a research associate at the University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alford and the University of California, Davis, according to a news release.

She earned a bachelor degree in agronomy from the Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay, a masters of science and a doctor's degree in plant pathology from UC Riverside.

Alico owns about 130,000 acres in Polk, Lee, Hendry, Glades and Collier counties.

The company is involved incitrus, sugarcane, cattle and other agriculture, as well as real estate.
