New poblano pepper hybrid
Morgan Hill, Calif.-based Sakata Seed America has introduced a Phytophthora-tolerant poblano or ancho pepper hybrid, XPP2548.
In a variety trial conducted by Michigan State University, the hybrid had the highest average survival rate when inoculated with four different Phytophthora root rot isolates.
It is a mid-season hybrid with large, smooth, extra dark green, uniformly two-lobed fruit, according to a news release. Plants tend to be medium height. Although XPP2548 is designed for growers in the Midwest and Northeast, Sakata officials say growers in the West with Phytophthora-infested soil may want to try the variety on a small acreage to see how it performs.
