Automatic GPS signal switching
AutoFarm of Fremont, Calif., has added Reflex Technology to its RTK AutoSteer and global positioning system-assisted steering systems.
The technology provides continuous positioning by automatically shifting to a lower-accuracy mode when the RTK radio link is temporarily lost due to blockage by structures, such as large trees or buildings.
As soon as the higher-accuracy signal is available, Reflex automatically switches back.
The operator can chose to jump from RTK to a Wide Area Augmentation System signal with blockage or OmniSTAR to WAAS. WAAS, a network of satellites and ground stations maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation, provides accuracy down to about 3 meters. It typically is used by airplane pilots for navigation. OmniSTAR Inc, a Houston, Texas, subscription-based service, provides differentially corrected GPS signals typically with accuracy down to 1.5 meters.
